Bad Credit Repair Simplified

Everyday, companies nationwide appeal to consumers with poor credit histories. They promise, for a fee, to clean up your credit report so you can get a car loan, a home mortgage, insurance, or even a job. The truth is, they can’t deliver. After you pay them hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees, these companies do nothing to improve your credit report; most simply vanish with your money.

Take advantage of the free government credit report from each of the National Consumer Credit Bureaus: Equifax, TransUnion and Equifax.

I remember when I graduated from college, over 20 years ago, I wanted to buy a car before I started my new job. I had had enough. I refused to be seen any longer riding around in a 1980 Ford Pinto. Some may recall that the Pinto had a slight design defect. Its fuel tank was in the rear where all gas tanks belong, however it was exposed. Let’s just say, Pintos’ didn’t handle rear-end collisions very well. Come to think of it, that’s probably why I got such a good deal when I bought it.

I really don’t know what I was thinking. I wasn’t going to start working for a couple of months. If I did buy the car how was I going to pay for it? That wasn’t important. I just wanted a new car. So, I went down to the dealer - test drove a brand new Nissan and told the salesman I wanted it.

The salesman said that he had to run a credit check. I said go ahead that shouldn’t be a problem. He said that if there were going to be any surprises - just tell him now and we could try to work through them. I said that there wouldn’t be any problems just go forward. Why did I say that? Back then, financial responsibility was the last thing on my mind. Sometimes I had money to pay my bills, but most times I didn’t. When I walked off that lot that day, I knew unless there was some divine intervention; I wouldn’t be getting that car.

Credit Tip! Many credit card companies will decide whether or not to issue you a credit card with a high limit based on your credit report. If in doubt they may not issue a card at all or issue a card with a very low limit or risk.

The next day I went to the dealership and the salesman just shook his head. I didn’t say a word. I just turned around a left. I said all of that to say save yourself some embarrassment. As of September 2005, you are entitled to a free copy from each of the three credit-reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, Trans Union) every year thanks to the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act. Free report If you don’t want to request your report over the Web, you can also call 1-877-322-8228 or complete and mail in the “Annual Credit Report Request Form” available at www.ftc.gov

Credit Tip! Tell the CRA what information you believe is inaccurate on your credit report. Include copies, never originals of documents that support your position.

About six months later, I bought myself a new car. Let’s just say the Pinto wasn’t cut-out for New England winters.

Credit Tip! Every negative credit record on your credit report can be negated by you at any time. The credit bureau must reinvestigate and if that item cannot be verified within a reasonable amount of time, that credit record must be removed from the credit file (credit report).

Other than eating, sleeping, and breathing, one of the most important things you should be doing on a regular basis is ensuring that the data in your credit report is accurate. That is such a simple statement, yet it is ignored by the vast majority of consumers, probably due to several factors, such as:

Credit Tip! Repair you own credit report.

* Consumers seem to accept the fact that errors will “self correct” in a reasonable period of time, where in reality nothing could be further from the truth.

* Consumers don’t know how to find out if there is wrong information on their credit report, which impacts their total credit score negatively.

* Consumers don’t realize that having a low credit score (lower than what they deserve, if the information maintained by the credit bureaus was accurate) can impact a huge number of factors in their everyday lives.

* Consumers don’t realize that studies have shown that the MAJORITY of credit reports on consumers and businesses have errors and inaccuracies.

Your credit score is used by anyone loaning you money such as credit card companies, home loan lenders, auto loan lenders and finance companies. You need to find out what your credit score is before you talk to any lender in case there is something on your report that they may question. Your credit score is the actual number ranging from 300 to 850 that lenders use to judge your creditworthiness and the interest rate they’ll charge you. Having a credit score lower than what you actually deserve could mean the difference between getting approved for a loan or credit card, or being denied. If you are approved, a lower credit score can mean the difference of the lender assessing a 14% interest rate or a 6% interest rate, which can cost you hundreds and even thousands of dollars more at the end of the loan period.

Credit Tip! You should contact the credit reporting agency and request that the inaccurate information be taken off. To do this you will need to send a letter of request and enclose a copy of the report with the incorrect information highlighted.

The “big three” credit bureaus are required to give you a free copy of your credit report annually, or any time that you have been denied credit based on information that they provided to a potential lender. It may take some time to get through to the credit bureaus to request a copy of your credit report, but this is well worth your time to do so. Be sure to get a copy of it from all three of them, since some lenders only report to one or two of them. This means that the information on your credit report from one credit bureau is almost certainly not going to be identical to the data from another credit bureau.

Credit Tip! Even accurate data in your credit report must be deleted if it’s not verified.

If you notice any errors on your report, you should complete a dispute form with the credit bureau. When they send you a copy of your credit report, they will usually include instructions on how to file a dispute for erroneous or inaccurate information. Some experts say that if you are disputing say 5 different items, you should file 5 separate dispute forms so each one can be addressed specifically. There is some merit to that discussion, since the credit bureaus may view a dispute consisting of many items as “frivolous” and not take appropriate action to correct the information.

Credit Tip! Creditors use your credit report and score to decide whether or not you should be given a loan.

Another excellent reason for keeping an eye on your credit report is because you will then be aware of any attempts at identity theft. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes of this century, and if someone has stolen your identity to open new accounts in your name, it will likely show up on your credit report. You should take the time to become familiar with identity theft and what you can do about it at Preventing Identity Theft.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you can dispute information in your credit files with the three credit bureaus, and the creditor is required by law to verify the disputed information. You have the right (and indeed, the obligation) to dispute the completeness and accuracy of information in your credit files. When a credit bureau receives a dispute, they must investigate and record the current status of the disputed items within a “reasonable period of time”, usually defined as 30 days. If the information reported on your credit report cannot be verified by the creditor, the credit bureau is required by law to remove the information.

Credit Tip! Many credit card companies will decide whether or not to issue you a credit card with a high limit based on your credit report. If in doubt they may not issue a card at all or issue a card with a very low limit or risk.

Check your credit report regularly, at least once per quarter. Even if the creditor misses that 30 day window, they can report the information again later, at which point when you see it appear again, you can (and should) dispute it again. Sometimes, for blatantly wrong information, you may want to contact the creditor directly and find out why they insist on putting inaccurate information on your credit report.

Credit Tip! Education loans are also sanctioned by colleges, universities, and other institutions based on your credit report. So, if your kids are planning to go to college and qualify in professional courses then their whole future will depend on your having a healthy credit report.

For most people having good credit is a necessary part of their financial well being. Your credit history has a large impact on the ability to receive a mortgage, car loan and credit cards. Most of time your credit rating is based and formulated using information that is found on your credit report. If you are new to having credit or finally realized how important credit can be, here is some information on what a credit report is and its importance in the credit process.

A credit report is a document that is used to summarize your financial reliability. Usually credit reports compile information that includes current loans and credit cards you have, your payment history, your outstanding debt and other personal information such as your current and previous address, full name, aliases, and companies or lenders that recently requested your credit report.

Credit reports are a very useful tool for companies and lenders to determine if a person they are either loaning money to or can be providing a job or an apartment for is reliable and stable with their finances. For instance, if you would like to apply for a credit card, when filling out the application, you sign a waiver giving the credit card permission to pull your credit report and analyze it. From this point the credit card company will look at your credit report to see if you have lots of other credit cards, the debt that you owe on those credit cards and if in the past were you late paying the monthly bills for the credit cards.

Credit Tip! Many credit card companies will decide whether or not to issue you a credit card with a high limit based on your credit report. If in doubt they may not issue a card at all or issue a card with a very low limit or risk.

Credit reports are instruments used by lenders and other entities to protect themselves against risk. While a credit report with lots of negative info can be bad for the person that is applying for a loan or apartment, credit reports are in most cases very helpful for consumers that keep up on their payments and are financially responsible. These consumers are able to acquire import loans such as mortgages and business loans that can help them reach their life goals.
Because credit reports are so important to the process of acquiring loans and a big factor in renting an apartment or applying for a job, it is extremely important that consumers know as much as possible on how credit reports are used, how they are scored and strategies on how your credit report can show you as being financially responsible.

Credit Tip! 2. Pay your bills on time. One of the most important things you can do to improve your credit score is pay your bills by the due date. You can set up automatic payments from your bank account to help you pay on time, but be sure you have enough money in your account to avoid overdraft fees.

You can always get a free credit check from any of the major credit reporting industries. This credit check will report on a number of areas about your personal and financial transactions and history over a period of years. It will contain some identifying information like your address and employer as well as your date of birth that has been culled from any previous applications for credit. Your credit check will reveal all of your bank or credit union accounts as well as any current loans or credit cards. It will also contain your credit application and repayment history.

Basically a credit check is like a medical check up. Your credit history is reviewed and examined in detail so that any past patterns or habits can be identified. You will be examined for any financial conditions that might impair your future financial health like bad debts, outstanding loans, or missed payments. It will also identify major incidents like loan defaults or bankruptcies which would be the credit equivalent of cancer or serious heart disease. Once that credit diagnosis has taken place through the credit check you will be given an assessment or credit rating.

This credit rating, which is determined through your credit check, will then identify you to potential lenders at a certain level of risk. That risk being the chances or likelihood that you will repay any credit or loan received at the appointed times during the life of the credit arrangement. A credit check will reveal all your financial and credit flaws but if you have been paying your bills on time that too will become clear and evident for anyone to see.

Credit experts recommend that you should get a credit check at least one a year just to see what type of information is being collected about you and your spending, credit, and debt history. That way you can ensure that it is up to date and accurate. If your credit check turns up any incorrect information or reports on situations that you are not aware of you can ask the credit reporting agency to remove that information from your file.

The other reason to get a yearly credit check is to make sure that any positive steps that you are undertaking to redeem your credit profile are also being reported on as well.

Credit Tip! The credit bureau must prove each credit record on your credit report. If this is not possible, it must be stricken from the credit report.

Credit Tip! Residents of Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont are entitled by state law to one free credit report from a credit-reporting agency per year. Residents of Georgia are entitled to two free credit reports.

If you want a credit report you should get a TRW free credit report as TRW is one of the “big three” credit agencies. TRW gives out free credit reports to individuals who want to know there credit score.

Why do I need a credit report?

Different credit bureaus compile credit information from different sources then relay that information to their customers. Retailers, employers, credit card companies and issuers, insurance companies, and banking institutions use these credit bureaus to get information on your history of credit. You should stay on top of your credit because in many cases the information can be incorrect. This can lead to things such as a loss of a job, denial of o loan, and receiving insurance.

Credit Tip! Residents of Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont are entitled by state law to one free credit report from a credit-reporting agency per year. Residents of Georgia are entitled to two free credit reports.

We as consumers have the responsibility to make sure our credit report is accurate as our reports are used in many of our personal financial dealings. Taking a look at your credit report on on regular basis is the foundation for successful financial planning.

Credit Tip! Repair you own credit report.

In addition to reviewing your credit report regularly, you must also know your FICO score. In fact, maintaining an accurate credit report is a part and parcel of good credit management, which can help to improve your FICO scores over time.

Most Folks Don’t Review Their Credit Report

The first time many people see their credit report is when they are about to buy a home or a car. However, the most opportune time to get your credit reports is long before you apply for any loan.

Long before applying for a mortgage you ought to make sure that the information contained in credit reports is accurate. The truth is that this information is essential and will have a significant impact on your ability to obtain certain loan packages.

Understanding credit reports is as vital to you, the consumer, as it is to the lending and financial institutions of the world. Understanding this information is one key to figuring out the loan process.

Credit Tip! You will see the addresses for each creditor on the credit report. If it is not there, then you can call customer service to ask them to provide you with the missing information.

Reviewing Your Credit Report Can Guard Against Identity Theft Loss

In addition, checking your consumer credit report is one way to guard against credit fraud. In fact, obtaining your annual credit reports is vital to helping to protect your credit profile from identity theft. Monitoring your credit information is one of the most efficient ways to protect yourself from criminals who want to steal your identity.

Checking your credit reports is specially important if you believe you may be a victim of identity theft. Keeping informed is a wise step in preventing credit fraud. Even though it can take years to repair damage to your good credit, the stress can last many years longer.

Mistakes on Your Credit Report Can Cause Trouble

Mistakes on credit reports is a big problem, according to the US Government. A frequent mistake on credit reports is erroneous information, such as showing the incorrect number of late payments. Oftentimes, the info on credit reports is not complete or inaccurate. The number of people with mistakes on their credit reports is relatively high.

If you feel that you have erroneous info on your report, keep in mind that disputing your credit reports is your right under the law (see fair credit Reporting Act). Another frequent error found is showing an outstanding balance on a loan that has been completely paid in full. That’s the reason checking out your credit reports on a regular basis is extremely important.

Credit Tip! Many credit card companies will decide whether or not to issue you a credit card with a high limit based on your credit report. If in doubt they may not issue a card at all or issue a card with a very low limit or risk.

Employers Look at Your Credit Report Too

One of the most controversial uses of credit reports is in employment and perhaps the most surprising use of credit reports is by potential employers. Some potential employers will use your credit history as a basis for their decision as to whether or not to hire you.

Another branch of business that uses credit reports is the insurance industry. Particular data from credit reports is used as one factor among many others that insurers use in whether or not to extend you insurance.

Have You Been Turned Down Because of Your Credit Report?

Another reason you want to review your credit report is if you have been turned down for credit and you are not sure why. Under these circumstances the 3 major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and Transunion) must by law provide you with a free credit report.

Credit Tip! Send your letter by certified mail, return receipt requested so you can document what the credit reporting agency received. Make sure your letter is dated, and don’t forget to keep copies of everything you send.

Also by law, under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, the Federal government requires the 3 major credit bureaus to, once a year, provide you with a free credit report … yes a free, no strings attached credit report.

Under this mandate, the 3 major credit bureaus put together a website to make this annual free credit report easy for you to get. You can get your free credit report at annualcreditreport.com

As you can see, having access to your credit report is critical. The 3-in-1 Credit Reports are the most inclusive picture of a consumer’s credit history, and include a brief glance summary of all account information. Sitting yourself down and reviewing all three credit reports on a regular basis is a must.

Credit Tip! The credit bureau must prove each credit record on your credit report. If this is not possible, it must be stricken from the credit report.

When it comes to the credit report there are no two people that react to it the same way. Some people are not concerned with it in the least bit. Some have some knowledge of its importance but are not overtly concerned about it. The vast majority of people unfortunately fall into the former category, people who do not have an inkling as to how their credit report affects their everyday life both now, the future and always. They and everyone else need to be aware of the inescapable and very important role their credit report plays in the world in which we live in today.

Credit Tip! Even accurate data in your credit report must be deleted if it’s not verified.

It may already seem like it stating the obvious that credit reports function primarily to help any lending institution, from banks to mortgage companies make a judgment about lending you money or credit in any form.

Lending institutions are deeply concerned with being repaid for any loans they make to any individual. This is what the whole financial industry is based. But how does this affect you, you might ask.
As lenders seek to provide loans to a larger target market, people with low or unfavorable credit scores also become a market. People that fall into this category are charged a very high interest rate as not just the cost of lending you money but also as the cost of the risk of providing you with the higher risk rating a loan.

These loans are structured to benefit the lending company completely. Even if you default you would have already paid the company most of the loan but in addition now you owe them extra and they can now go after you to get that extra money. This is the cost of having a low or negative credit score.
If you intend to get a loan at one time or the other to finance a car, your home, an education, or any other purchase that requires financing or credit you might begin to consider the importance of having and keeping a good credit score.

Credit Tip! You should contact the credit reporting agency and request that the inaccurate information be taken off. To do this you will need to send a letter of request and enclose a copy of the report with the incorrect information highlighted.

Even something as simple as leasing or renting an apartment requires the use of your credit score. The reason behind this is the need for the landlord to know that you can pay your rent fees when it falls due. So again keeping a good credit score will be beneficial to you.

Even more importantly there is a new trend by employers in using potential employees’ credit score to assess applications. There is a silent belief that individuals with good credit scores are more responsible and reliable and therefore worthy of employment. The irony is that the people who might be in need of the job more are the very ones who are denied. Unfortunately this is the way things are.
There really is no need not to be on top of your credit score or ratings. It affects every facet of your life your present and your future. The safest thing to do would be not to ignore your credit report.

Credit Tip! Get a copy of your credit report.
Under the laws of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) each of the three major credit reporting companies are required to give consumers access to obtain free credit report once every 12 months. These reports include various information about you that the government has on file, including where you live, whether you’ve been sued, your credit score, how you pay your bills and several other things. In exchange for the services this company provides, they are entitled to sell your credit report to creditors, employers, insurers, and other professional organizations that need to evaluate your score.

Visiting the official website online will allow you to obtain a copy of your credit report from each of the three reporting agencies. These reports are absolutely free every year, and you can choose to stagger when you get the reports or request all three at the same time. It’s important to look over your credit report at least once a year in order to check for accuracy. Inaccurate information can affect your ability to get a loan as well as the amount of money you’d have to pay to do so. Obtain free credit report and thoroughly review the information once a year in order to ensure the information is correct.

Credit Tip! Many credit card companies will decide whether or not to issue you a credit card with a high limit based on your credit report. If in doubt they may not issue a card at all or issue a card with a very low limit or risk.

While the FCRA specifies who can obtain a copy of your credit report, employers can only gain access to your report with written consent from you. To obtain free credit report, you can go online or call one of the three major reporting agencies (Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian) to take advantage of their services and review your reports. There’s no reason why you can’t obtain a free credit report and you should definitely think about doing so in order to review your report and check for accuracy.

Have you been turned down for a home or car loan? Are you frustrated and confused by the information you have found online? Do you want to know how to repair your credit report quickly and easily?

The first thing that I will tell you about repairing your credit is do not pay some agency that promises to repair your credit report and all you have to do is send them $199 or some such sum of money. These agencies are one of the most common scams on the net. You can repair your own credit and it can be done in under 3 months. You can do this without paying some high priced credit repair agency.

Repairing your credit report is easy, it’s just a matter of going through the process and taking the most appropriate steps. When repairing your credit you will first have to request copies of your credit report of any of the 3 major credit reporting agencies.

Then you will have to write individual letters to each credit reporting agency disputing any inaccuracies in your credit. You will have to also write letters to each company or entity that you have a disputed claim with. Many credit repair specialist even encourage you to write letters to every company or entity that are responsible for any negative marks on your credit.

The rationale for this is that all of those companies that may have reported negative things to credit reporting agencies have to provide proof to you if you ask for it. If they can not provide proof to you then they by law have to drop their remarks on you credit report, this will improve your credit report.

Credit Tip! 2. Pay your bills on time. One of the most important things you can do to improve your credit score is pay your bills by the due date. You can set up automatic payments from your bank account to help you pay on time, but be sure you have enough money in your account to avoid overdraft fees.

A good credit repair specialist can give you very specific advice on what steps to take. This process can be done in under 3 months. Also when repairing your credit report, credit repair specialist can even give you exact templates to use when sending letters to dispute claims on your credit.

Contact a good credit repair specialist and start repairing your credit report today. Three months from now you will be well on your way to buying that car or buying that home. Most importantly you will have a repaired credit report.

With all those countless TV and radio commercials out there, it would be heard
to imagine that you have not heard that you can go online and get your credit
report for free. But you might wonder why on earth you should bother to do this
if you have not gotten a letter from the IRS or been otherwise informed that you
have some sort of problem. Well, that is a good question that I wondered about
myself, but had not taken the time to find out the answer.

Credit Tip! Repair you own credit report.

My wife however, is very different. She decided to take full advantage of
getting a free online credit report and nearly fell over when she found out that
someone had stolen her identity! Now, that is not the same thing as charging
something to her credit card or trying to gain access her bank account. In the
case of identity theft, they simply use your name, address, and social security
number to make their purchase. In the case of my wife, the identity thief has a brand
new cell phone plan that is registered in her name. And if the thief decides not
to pay their bills, guess whose credit gets ruined!

Who would do a thing like this, you might wonder. Well, I am not sure, but I do
know that there are tons of sleazy individuals in this world who prey on
innocent people this way, every single day. And how did they get her personal
information? That is what I’d like to know! Fortunately, my wife took advantage
of the free credit report, and was able to stop the identity thief before he
bought a whole bunch of other stuff in her name that he had no intention of
paying for. Luckily, she was able to put an end to it by filing a fraud
document.

Credit Tip! 5. Beware of credit-repair scams. Sometimes doing it yourself is the best way to repair your credit. The Federal Trade Commission’s “credit repair: How to Help Yourself” explains how you can improve your creditworthiness and lists legitimate resources for low-cost or no-cost help.

So do not become a victim of identity theft when it’s so easy to get your credit
report free online. You can do it 24/7, and right now is not too soon. Just get
on your computer and search for “free credit report” and you will find several
websites to choose from. Hopefully, unlike my wife, you will find out that nobody
has stolen your identity or been tampering with your credit score. But would you like to find out if they have?

Credit Tip! Tell the CRA what information you believe is inaccurate on your credit report. Include copies, never originals of documents that support your position.

With so much of today’s living based on personal credit the importance of having a good credit report cannot be stated enough. Today your credit report impacts your ability to get a loan, to get a car, to rent an apartment just to name a few things that are impacted by your credit report and credit rating. You may and are usually denied access to credit if your credit score is low which makes your credit rating bad, making you ineligible for credit and a high credit risk.

Of course if you are denied credit under any circumstance you can choose to see your credit report and see the reason why you were denied credit. Being denied credit due to a bad credit score should not be surprising to you if you already know your credit score is bad. What should be the concern is how to repair your credit report as quickly as possible and be able to get credit securely without fear of being denied.

One of the quick ways to start repairing your credit report is by direct contact with the reporting agency. If you find an inconsistency in your credit report the first thing to do is to point out the inconsistency and send any supporting documents that will clarify the discrepancy. The advantage of this is that the agency is compelled by law to investigate the issue and correct your credit report.

Credit Tip! 4. Learn the legal steps you must take to improve your credit report. The Federal Trade Commission’s “Building a Better Credit Report” has information on correcting errors in your report, tips on dealing with debt and avoiding scams–and more.

When you do contact the credit report agency they are compelled to investigate the particular company you have the dispute with. Here’s why this is one of the fastest ways to repair you credit. If within two weeks there is no confirmation from the company being disputed they must remove the item from your credit report thereby improving your credit score and credit rating. But you have to be vigilant about this as it requires a follow up from you to ensure that later part is actually done.

Here is a little secret as to why this is the best kept secret to repairing your credit. Most creditors usually will not respond if the item has been in existence longer than a year old and is less than five hundred dollars. There is also the added bonus of retrying a second time if the first is not completely successful after an initial thirty day period.

Credit Tip! In addition to providing your complete name and address, your letter should clearly identify each item in your credit report that you dispute. State the facts and why you are disputing the information.

Most people don’t know this and it is another secret you can use to your advantage. You can actually add explanatory comments to your credit report which is permanent. Anyone who views your credit report will see this and factor your explanation in any decisions towards extending credit to you. This works best if you have a plausible explanation, like a charge that should not have been.

Many people who have been hit with credit problems and bad credit reports usually loose all hope in repairing their credit. This should not be as there are little known secrets that can help repair and put credit report back in order really fast and in short order.

Credit Tip! Don’t attempt to create a separate credit identity to get around your flawed credit report.

Are you among the millions of Americans who owe money and are having difficulty
paying off your debts? Well, the right place to start when you are looking to
get out of debt and improve your credit rating is to get a current copy of your
credit report. However, before you look for help online, there are a number of
things you need to be aware of so that you do not get burned. You should be wary
of agencies that offer to help by providing you with credit counseling. There
are many scams on the internet involving companies that will promise you the
moon and not deliver - or worse.

There are three highly reputed agencies that offer credit reports. The two that
I am familiar with are Equifax and Transunion, but it is a good idea to get
copies of your credit report from all three when trying to repair your credit
score. I am also aware of another one that is very well-known, but is one to
stay away from. It’s www.freecreditreport.com. I say that because McAfee Site
Advisor warns this site may contain misleading information and should be
approached cautiously.

Credit Tip! Also if you have been denied credit on the basis of information in a credit report, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from the credit bureau that supplied the credit report.

Whatever you do, avoid websites that you know nothing about when
trying to get your credit report because you will need to give sensitive
personal information you do not want ending up in the wrong hands. Stay away
from those sites offering free reports, as they may fall into that category.
It’s well worth it to pay a nominal amount to an agency that you know you can
trust. It is never worth the risk of compromising such important, private
information.

Should you happen to find yourself in a situation where either you or your
spouse have been denied financial assistance or employment due to a poor credit
rating, the same advice applies. Always make certain that you go through a
reliable agency to obtain copies of your credit reports. Fortunately, in such
situations, you legally have the right to review your reports to see what was on
them that led to your rejection. However, you only have a limited time in which
to do this, so be forewarned. In most cases, the letter of rejection contains
this information, in addition to agency contacts where you can go to obtain the
details of your credit scores. Getting your credit report is the first step on
the road to mending your credit score, and having the knowledge of where to go
to get it makes an often frustrating task that much easier.

Credit Tip! You will see the addresses for each creditor on the credit report. If it is not there, then you can call customer service to ask them to provide you with the missing information.

Since loans are advanced based on the credit reports the chances of loans going bad are minimal.

You see the advertisements in newspapers, on TV, and on the Internet. You hear them on the radio. You get fliers in the mail. You may even get calls from telemarketers offering credit repair services.
They all make the same claims:

Do yourself a favor and save some money, too. Don’t believe these promises. Only time, a conscious effort, and a personal debt repayment plan will improve your credit report.

Did you know that there’s a fourth credit bureau of considerable influence in this country? The company is called Innovis, and you might want to contact Innovis and find out what information this company is reporting about you.

As recently as 2003, Innovis denied that it was actually in the credit-reporting business. There are numerous published reports in which the company flat-out denied that the information it gathers or sells about consumers could be used by creditors for the purpose of extending credit. Shortly thereafter, consumer advocates - like the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) - starting insisting that Innovis was in fact a credit bureau and should have to abide by the same rules as other credit agencies.

Credit Tip! In addition to providing your complete name and address, your letter should clearly identify each item in your credit report that you dispute.
After some outside pressure and scrutiny, Innovis now acknowledges that it is, indeed a credit reporting agency. According to published reports, Innovis primarily collects negative information about consumers: things like late payments, judgments, bankruptcies, collection accounts, repossessions, and so forth. That information is then sold to banks and other financial institutions. Well, if you do get credit offers, you certainly want them to be the best ones available, like low interest rate balance transfers, for instance.

************************************

Did you know?

No one can legally remove accurate and timely negative information from a credit report. The law allows you to ask for an investigation of information in your file that you dispute as inaccurate or incomplete. There is no charge for this. Everything a credit repair clinic can do for you legally, you can do for yourself at little or no cost. According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

Credit Tip! Tell the CRA what information you believe is inaccurate on your credit report. Include copies, never originals of documents that support your position.

************************************

But when companies buy data from Innovis, reportedly what they are screening for is people with “bad” credit - or at least people who used to have bad credit. This can have two effects on you. First, it would screen you out of the lists of top-tier consumers who are getting low-interest credit offers. Second, it makes you open game for getting a host of credit offers you probably don’t want to get. Think about it for a minute: If a bank or credit card company is actively targeting consumers with poor credit histories, what kind of credit offers do you think they’ll be making? More than likely, they’ll be throwing out high interest-rate offers - above the 20% level - or solicitations for “secured” credit cards.

Again, if you’re already considered a “sub-prime” borrower, you don’t want to get these offers. So make sure you write Innovis and find out what information the company has about you. Unlike the other credit bureaus - that let you get your credit report online or talk to representatives over the telephone, Innovis doesn’t make it easy to establish contact. The only way you can obtain your Innovis credit report is by writing the company.

Credit Tip! Education loans are also sanctioned by colleges, universities, and other institutions based on your credit report. So, if your kids are planning to go to college and qualify in professional courses then their whole future will depend on your having a healthy credit report.

To get your Innovis credit report, send them a letter asking for your credit file. Be sure to include your name, current address, and social security number. Innovis also requires your previous address for the last two years if you haven’t been at your current residence for two years, your date of birth, a copy of your driver’s license or a utility bill to verify your address, your telephone number, your current employer, and your signature.

Credit Tip! Creditors use your credit report and score to decide whether or not you should be given a loan.

Take advantage of the free government credit report from each of the National Consumer Credit Bureaus: Equifax, TransUnion and Equifax.

Frequently Asked Questions Related to Credit Reports
Credit reports are very detailed and are often confusing to understand. Featured below are some answers to common questions regarding credit reports.

Q: How long do negative marks stay on my credit report?
A: Usually, any type of credit info, good or bad, stays on your file for seven years from the time of occurrence, or when the account is paid in full or is closed.

There are times when credit will stay on your file for more than seven years. For example, a mortgage and/or credit card account will be listed on your credit report for longer than seven years. This occurs because these two types of accounts are typically active for many years.

Credit Tip! You will see the addresses for each creditor on the credit report. If it is not there, then you can call customer service to ask them to provide you with the missing information.

Also, bankruptcies stay on your credit report file for ten years. Unpaid tax liens will remain on your file for as long as you are alive! Government student loans that are in default will stay listed for an indefinite period of time.

Q: How can I be 100% sure that negative information is going to be removed from my credit file when it is supposed to be?

Credit Tip! Don’t attempt to create a separate credit identity to get around your flawed credit report.

A: The credit reporting bureaus have complex computer systems that will automatically remove information as soon as they hit their respective seven and ten year expirations. However, we recommend that you get a copy of your credit report at least once a year to ensure that your credit file is being reported accurately and up-to-date.

Q: What is the purpose of there being three different credit reporting agencies?
A: It is likely that each bureau if going to have a different profile on you. Therefore, three companies allow certainty that your information is present. However, it is also likely that one of more of your credit files is going to have mis-information or there is going to be information missing.

Credit Tip! Creditors use your credit report and score to decide whether or not you should be given a loan.

Below is some more reasoning behind there being three credit bureaus:

– Not all creditors will report your history to all three agencies. This will result in your info not being present one or more of your files as reported by three credit reporting companies.

– Even if all of your information is being reported to all three bureaus, it is likely that they will each have a different profile of you since the information is going to be reported at different times.

– It is very common for creditors to not use all three credit bureaus when pulling your credit file.

Q: What kinds of debts are listed on my credit report?
A: Typically, credit cards, auto loans, home mortgages and student loans will be listed on your credit report. Utilities, cell phone bills, doctor invoices and other types of non-traditional credit will not be present. Be aware that if you don’t make payments on any type of non-traditional account, it will be reported and reflected negatively in your credit report.

Credit Tip! Residents of Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont are entitled by state law to one free credit report from a credit-reporting agency per year. Residents of Georgia are entitled to two free credit reports.

Q: How long does new credit take to be reflected on my credit report?
A: It usually will take a minimum of 3-6 months for an account to be open before you see any signs of positive credit.

Q: Will my credit score be affected if I get a copy of my report for my own personal viewing?
A: Your credit score is never affected when you get a copy for yourself. Please note that your score is adversely affected every time someone else runs an inquiry.

Credit Tip! Even accurate data in your credit report must be deleted if it’s not verified.

Q: How is my credit impacted when a creditor pulls my credit?
A: As mentioned, your score is adversely affected every time someone else runs an inquiry. Typically, your credit file will be reflective of all inquiries for the past 24 months.

Credit Tip! Creditors use your credit report and score to decide whether or not you should be given a loan.

Have you ever heard of a credit report? You have probably been hearing about the importance of good credit for quite some time now. However, you may not know exactly how you can achieve the good credit status that is highly sought after these days. One thing that you need to know is that you can actually use your credit report as a handy tool to help you build up or improve your credit score.

Basically, your credit report is a complete history and record of all of your loans, credit cards and so on. This report will include such information as your payment histories, where you have applied for credit, where you have applied for employment and more.

When you apply for credit or a loan somewhere, the lending agency will usually use your credit report to decide whether or not your history shows that you are worthy of the credit that you are requesting. The lending agencies will usually take a look at your credit report so that they can check and see what your history is in as far as making timely payments, credit lines you currently have, and to search for comparable credit limits. For example, if you tend to have a good number of late payments listed in your credit report, they may be less likely to give you the loan or the credit card that you are requesting because they view you as a risk. Or on the other hand if you have an excellent payment history but only one credit card with a limit of $2,000 and you are asking for a loan of $25,000, they may turn you down for not having comparable credit. In both instances you will probably need to ask someone to co-sign for you.

Credit Tip! Many credit card companies will decide whether or not to issue you a credit card with a high limit based on your credit report. If in doubt they may not issue a card at all or issue a card with a very low limit or risk.

How To Put Your Credit Report To Work For You

In order to make your credit report work for you there are a couple of things that you can do.

1. Obviously, the main thing that you want to do is pay all of your payments on time.

2. Next up, you will want to get your credit report or sign up for a program online that lets you view your credit report whenever you like. This way, you can keep track of everything on there and make sure that all of the information is accurate.

Credit Tip! Even accurate data in your credit report must be deleted if it’s not verified.

3. Check for errors

4. If you find errors create a credit diary and start correcting those errors

5. If you are seeking a large loan, but don’t see a comparable credit line, start calling your current creditors and ask for a credit line increase. DO NOT USE THE CREDIT LINE. Just have it increased so that when they pull your credit, they see a comparable line of credit.

It may sound silly that you have to watch your credit report, but you would be amazed at the number of people who actually have errors on their credit report and they are completely unaware of it. These errors can and will end up hurting in the long run, so it is always best to double check everything that is listed in your credit report.

Credit Tip! 1. Get copies of your credit report–then make sure the information is correct. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com. This is the only authorized online source for a free credit report.

Also with identity theft on the raise, you really need to keep an eye on your credit report. Do not become a credit fraud victim.

Start keeping track of your credit today…so you can put it to work for you tomorrow!

Credit Tip! You should contact the credit reporting agency and request that the inaccurate information be taken off. To do this you will need to send a letter of request and enclose a copy of the report with the incorrect information highlighted.

If you haven’t got a free credit report yet, then read this and know how to get one. However, before we go forward with the process, let us answer three most common questions being asked by people.

What Actually Is A Credit Report?

A credit report is another name for your financial report card. It contains a list of your stupendous loans and debts and other debt information. It’s your credit report that finance companies turn to in order to decide whether you are eligible for a loan.

Who Prepares Credit Report?

There are three major credit reporting agencies viz; Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. They collect information from creditors and compile it to form a report. Your credit report can be transformed into a numerical credit score. This score is later utilized as a rating tool. If the rating is high, you pose a lesser risk to the lenders. It is the duty of the credit bureaus to provide a free credit report on request.

What is a credit score?

A credit score is the numerical form achieved by using a formula that rates your credit report. Your credit report is fed into the computer program where it is analyzed and then, a number is assigned to you, which is known as credit score. It tells your creditors about your creditworthiness. A credit score ranges between 300 and 800.

Credit Tip! Education loans are also sanctioned by colleges, universities, and other institutions based on your credit report. So, if your kids are planning to go to college and qualify in professional courses then their whole future will depend on your having a healthy credit report.

It’s Your Right To Ask For Free Credit Report

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) states that each of the major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) has to provide a free credit report every year on your request.

To Get A Free Credit Report, You Need:

Your name, address, and date of birth

Your Social Security Number

You may also require any previous addresses

At the end, you will be required to disclose an information that only YOU are aware of, such as the payment amount, for security purposes

Credit Tip! Creditors use your credit report and score to decide whether or not you should be given a loan.

Reading Your Free Credit Report

As soon as you get your free credit report, carefully check your personal details such as your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security Number. A minute mistake in this information can do great harm to your credit file. You cannot imagine what damage can be done if your name is misspelt!
Next comes the Public Record Information section. It contains records of any bankruptcies, liens, foreclosures, and verdict against your credit. Examine this section to make sure there’s nothing strange. If you think there is something fishy in there, beware, it could be a case of identity theft! Inform the credit bureaus at once.

There is another section in your free credit report containing collection agency account information. Any accounts shifted to collections are recorded here, including name of your collection agency, account number, opening date of the account, and the due balance. Here too, you should be vigilant for anything strange.

Lastly, there is the credit account information in your free credit report. It shows the complete list of your credit accounts, along with a summary of your earlier credit record. Scrutinize the accounts, their opening dates, balances, date of last activity, and status. Never overlook anything that seems wrong to you in your free credit report. If you do so, you might have to pay a heavy price. Call the credit bureau from where you got the free credit report and tell them about your suspicion. Ensure that they take action fast.

Credit Tip! Also if you have been denied credit on the basis of information in a credit report, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from the credit bureau that supplied the credit report.

Be a smart free credit report reader!

Credit Tip! Residents of Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont are entitled by state law to one free credit report from a credit-reporting agency per year. Residents of Georgia are entitled to two free credit reports.

Credit report repair can be a long, tedious process and one of the hardest items to get removed is a bankruptcy.

Credit Tip! Repair you own credit report.

In order to remove a bankruptcy, you must remove everything else from your credit report first, here is why

If you have a bankruptcy and several accounts under it entitled “included in bankruptcy” the credit bureaus will simply assume it’s accurate since you have accounts that are covered under bankruptcy protection.

The First Steps:
Go over your credit report very carefully. If you live at an address other then the address where you filed, have it removed. Debts are often tied to addresses.

Then, dispute and remove every account showing as “included in bankruptcy”. This shouldn’t be hard since creditors have very little incentive to verify the information. Why would they? They can’t get paid on it.

This process can take several months be patient, I promise it will pay off. Let’s look at how bankruptcy files are stored; it is the key to successfully removing it from your credit report.

How your bankruptcy is filed and stored.
After two years, your file is moved from the local court at which you filed, to a central storage facility. If you go to your local court and request to see your file, they will have to order it and have it brought back to the court.

Credit Tip! Education loans are also sanctioned by colleges, universities, and other institutions based on your credit report. So, if your kids are planning to go to college and qualify in professional courses then their whole future will depend on your having a healthy credit report.

Have them order it. The time it takes to arrive is about a week. Once it arrives they will put it in a special place and notify you that it has arrived.

Let me back up for a moment. Once you order your BK file, wait about 3 days and then send a dispute to the credit bureaus. They will then call the “storage facility” where your bankruptcy file should be - and discover it won’t be.

It will be either in transition back to your local court, or already there and waiting for you to come view it.

Stall tactics are key.
Once your file arrives back to the local court, they will start calling you to come view it. It is very important that you delay as long as possible. Remember, credit bureaus have 30 days to verify any disputed debts and it’s very important you keep your file in that “holding room” for as long as you can.

Tell them, you’re extremely busy at work, but will be there Monday. Call Monday and inform them you had an out of town meeting and promise to be there Friday. What you’re trying to accomplish is keeping that file on hold the entire 30 days while the credit bureaus tries to verify its existence.

If you have no idea about how good or bad your credit rating is, it would be a
good idea to obtain a credit report. When you plan on any major purchase that
will require credit, such as a home loan, a car loan or you just want to open up
a credit card account, knowing what your credit rating is ahead of time will be
a big advantage. If you already have applied for credit and been refused,
reading your credit report will help to explain why.

Getting a credit report nowadays is very simple and easy. If you have access to
a computer and the internet, you can obtain your credit report in no time, right
in the comfort of your home. There are many sites that can supply your credit
report. If you are planning on applying for credit, just log onto one of these
sites to get the report. You can even find a site that will supply your credit
report for free.

Credit Tip! The credit report plays a significant role in the functioning of consumer credit markets. Since loans are advanced based on the credit reports the chances of loans going bad are minimal.

Be careful, however, that you sign up with a legitimate site. There are some
sites that will request your credit card number and a lot of other information
about you, and then you will never get your report. Make sure the site you use
is traceable so that if you do get charged for a report, you will know who to
report to your credit card company.

The safest thing to do is to pay the fee for a credit report from one of the
established companies in that field, such as Experian or Equifax. The fee is
only about $30, so it is worthwhile to make sure you are going to get your
report. And you will be sure that you are going to get a detailed, accurate
report.

Research the information on a number of sites before you decide on where to get
your credit report. Many times the sites that offer free credit reports are
going to have some other conditions. There is even the risk that the site is
not at all legitimate and will only use all of the information you give them for
identity theft or worse. Be sure you are dealing with a legitimate company when
you sign up to get your credit report, or you may pay dearly for it in the end.

Credit Tip! You will see the addresses for each creditor on the credit report. If it is not there, then you can call customer service to ask them to provide you with the missing information.
